The accessibility of the built environment is a key element to ensure the effective participation of EU citizens in everyday life, as well as the suitability of buildings, streets, parks, to being effectively used by people in view of their disabilities or age.
Historically, the European Commission has supported standardisation in this field, first with Mandate M/420 and, currently, with the Standardisation Request M/587. In this framework, CEN/CLC/JTC 11 ‘Accessibility in the Built Environment’ is revising its main document, EN 17210, which describes the requirements and recommendations of an accessible built environment, to support the implementation of the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882).
