Pressure equipment encompasses various devices, each distinguished by unique complexities, materials, operational conditions, manufacturing processes, and control technologies. At the crux of safety regulations within the European Union, the Pressure Equipment Directive (Directive 2014/68/EU) governs pressure equipment across various industries. A recent formal request for standardisation has been made to the European CEN-CENELEC in support of Directives (EU) 2014/68 and 2014/29/EU, entailing the development and revision of an extensive portfolio comprising around 240 standards.

Moreover, given the escalating significance of hydrogen in numerous industries, including energy, transportation, and industrial processes, several technical committees within the CEN are presently engaged in meticulously revising existing standards under the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU). This endeavour aims to address the increasing demand for hydrogen deployment technologies adequately. Additionally, these efforts encompass addressing the current requisites of the aviation sector, aligning with Europe's 2050 climate objectives.

The standardisation sector associated with the PED 2014/68/EU and the SPVD 2014/29/EU encounters various challenges that can influence harmonised standards' development, implementation and effectiveness. These challenges include legal complexity, the intricate nature of pressure equipment, rapid technological advancements, and the need for cross-disciplinary expertise. To address these challenges, the "Pressure Equipment Advisory Nucleus" (PE/AN) functions as a coordinating and advisory body, uniting pertinent experts and stakeholders. Its primary objective is to ensure that pressure equipment standards remain aligned with the PED 2014/68/EU and the SPVD 2014/29/EU.
