In the daily life of millions of Europeans, railways provide a safe, comfortable, fast and environment friendly mean of transport. Also, it allows the circulation of goods across Europe through an efficient and sustainable freight transport. Whether for short leisure travels or long-distance freight delivery, organizing a reliable and interoperable European railways network is fundamental.
To ensure better and safer railways, European Standards developed by CEN and CENELEC provide the backbone of railway design, manufacturing and maintenance. CEN and CENELEC railways standards provide a systematic point of reference for all operators and manufacturers and it allows them to work together beyond boundaries.
A wide amount of these railways standards are developed in support of the European Legislation on railways, more precisely, the Directive concerning the Interoperability of the European Railway System. By supporting this Directive, the standards help manufacturers and operators to achieve an interoperable railways network facilitating the daily transfer of goods and passengers across the EU.
At the side of the railways applications, CEN and CENELEC also develop standards supporting a very new transport system, the hyperloop. The European standards contribute to the development of strong requirements for this emerging technology of transport. This standardization covers all systems, products, services and applications related to the hyperloop transport system.
