High-Level Forum on Standardization

What is the Forum 

The High-Level Forum on European Standardisation (the forum) is an expert group of the European Commission. It was set up in January 2023 as requested by the EU Strategy on Standardisation

 

The purpose of the forum is to identify standardisation priorities in support of EU policies and legislation, and to discuss horizontal issues such as international leadership and education and skills, in a multi-stakeholder setting.

The objectives of the Forum 

The forum serves 3 main objectives

  • to support a green, digital and more resilient single market by identifying the related standardisation priorities and agreeing on avenues for common action
  • to bring more alignment between European policy priorities, industrial innovation and investment activities and standardisation actions
  • to discuss possible work strands in support of the implementation of the EU Strategy on Standardisation in a multi-stakeholder set-up

Composition

The forum brings together high-level representatives of up to 60 members consisting of stakeholders from EU/EEA countries, European standardisation organisations, industry, civil society and academia. The current forum comprises 55 members

  • Sherpas for CEN: Andreea Gulacsi (CCMC, Green) Stefan Weisgerber (DIN, Digital) and Pedro Pablo López Bernal (UNE, Resilience). 
  • Sherpas for CENELEC: Pouline Terpager (DS, Green), Johannes Koch (DKE, Digital), and Bernhard Spalt (OVE, Resilience)

Tasks of Sherpa Sub-group

 

The Sherpa Sub-group is expected to

  • advise the Commission on matters related to European standardisation policy;
  • support the identification and implementation of annual priorities for European standardisation supporting a green, digital, fair and resilient Single Market, including the identification and implementation of urgent standards development work;
  • support the identification of potential future standardisation needs in support of Union legislation, programs and policies;
  • advise and support the Commission on coordinating effective representation of Union interests in international standardisation organisations and fora;
  • advise the Commission on how to ensure that European standardisation activities meet the needs to make the Union economy more green, digital, fair and resilient;
  • advise the Commission on how to better interlink research, development and innovation activities with standardisation and how to strengthen academic teaching and technical expertise and skills in standards.
