Ongoing Horizon Europe Projects

CEN and CENELEC member organizations (the national standards organization or national committees) offer their participation as a project partner to projects where there is the intention to include a work package addressing the contribution to standardization in the project proposal.

The European Organizations CEN and CENELEC themselves will usually not participate in Research &Innovation projects which target a specific technology. They will only take part as beneficiary in project proposals where the link to standardization is of a more strategic and horizontal nature which is typically reserved for Co-ordination and Support Actions.

At the moment CEN and/or CENELEC participate in 4 Horizon Europe projects:

A Roadmap for Industrial Symbiosis Standardisation for Efficient Resource Sharing

RISERS is a Coordination and Support Action funded by Horizon Europe under Grant Agreement 101135539 which will develop a roadmap that defines areas, directions and proposes actions where standards are needed to advance industrial symbiosis with focus on priority resources and synergies demonstrating the highest symbiotic potential in Europe.

Industrial symbiosis (IS) refers to collaborative and mutually profitable relationships between different industries to improve resource utilisation and productivity based on business opportunities. It creates an interconnected industrial landscape where one company or sector uses underutilised resources such as: as waste, by-products, residues, energy, water, infrastructures, capacity, expertise, equipment, materials from another company or sector with the result of keeping resources in productive use for longer and for an economic profit.

The project capitalises on the Workshop Agreement (CWA 17354) ‘Industrial Symbiosis: Core Elements and Implementation Approaches’.

Objectives:

  • identification of priority synergies between industries and sectors;
  • strengthening the links between R&I and standardisation to valorise and integrate R&I results into IS standardisation processes;
  • cooperation with policy makers to develop policy frameworks in support of industrial symbiosis and engagement with standardisation experts;
  • develop a Standardisation Roadmap for boosting IS impact;
  • provide guidelines for technical committees to address industrial symbiosis in standardisation processes.

Project consortium:

  • Enspire Science Ltd. (coordinator)
  • Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN)
  • Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN)
  • EIT Raw Materials GMBH
  • Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI)

STAN4SWAP proposes to develop a robust standardization roadmap towards boosting innovation to market for swappable Battery Systems for L-cat vehicles deployment as a major contribution to safe, secure, resources and environmental friendly and interoperable decarbonization solution of the Mobility-Transport sector.

Stan4SWAP is a two-year project funded by the Horizon Europe research and innovation program (under grant agreement No. 101135417) aiming at developing a standardization roadmap for swappable battery systems for lightweight category electric vehicles.

Battery swapping is an innovative system allowing electric vehicle owners to swap out their empty batteries for fully charged ones in a matter of minutes. It has the potential to revolutionize electric mobility, facilitating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. This will in turn contribute in a significant manner to decarbonizing the mobility sector, especially in urban areas, taking a significant step towards meeting the EU carbon neutrality targets.

Objectives:

  • Identification of needs for Pre-Normative Research work in the context of swappable battery systems for Light-categories of mobility and transportation;
  • Prioritizing standardization activities towards supporting the deployment of a swappable Battery Systems for L-cat vehicles, as a major contribution to safe, secure, resources and environmentally friendly and interoperable decarbonization solution;
  • Increase stakeholders’ engagement, establishing an active dialogue between the standardization community, industry and research;
  • Educating and raising awareness about the role of standardization in supporting the decarbonization of mobility and transportation ecosystem.

Project consortium:

  • Piaggio (coordinator)
  • CENELEC
  • HYBA
  • SWOBBEE
  • KTM
  • Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)
  • Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI)

InDiCo-Global will build on the footsteps of InDiCo (International Digital Cooperation) to strengthen international cooperation and understanding between technical communities and policy makers on digital policies and ICT.

InDiCo-Global is a three-year project funded by the Horizon Europe research and innovation program (under grant agreement No. 101136022) that aims to extend previous global cooperations in the realms of ICT standardization (e.g., SESEI, SESEC, EU-India project on ICT cooperation) in new geographies. The project will target China, India, South-east Asia, the African Union, Western Balkans, the Eastern Partnership and Latin America & Caribbean. Focused technologies include 5G, AI, IoT, cybersecurity, quantum, eID & Distributed Ledger Technologies.

40% of the project budget (€ 1 000 000) has been set aside for the “Financial Support to Third Parties” (FSTP) mechanism. InDiCo-Global will launch three open calls (April 2024, January 2025, January 2026) for micro-projects covering the named technology areas in the targeted geographies.

Objectives:

  • Promoting the EU model for setting global interoperable ICT/digital standards;
  • Enhancing the promotion of the EU ICT/digital standards for key technologies;
  • Understanding third countries’ standardization ecosystems and, if needed, capacity building in terms of digital standardization;
  • Promoting the EU vision and approach to data protection.
