R&I Communities - Reaching Out

CEN and CENELEC are aiming to become the natural standardization partners of researchers and innovators in Europe.

This was the explicit objective of their Innovation Plan that was approved in 2018 and is also what the EC’s Code of Practice on standardization in the European Research Area , published in March 2023, aims to promote.

In order to inform the R&I community of the added value standardization can bring to research and research projects; it is important to ensure that researchers have sufficient knowledge on the basics of standardization.

IPR & Patents

When considering the needs of the research and innovation communities, the co-existence of patents and standards and other IPR aspects must be addressed:

• The CEN-CENELEC policy on patents is described in CEN and CENELEC Guide 8 'CEN-CENELEC Guidelines for Implementation of the Common Policy on Patents (and other statutory intellectual property rights based on inventions) .
• Also relevant for the research and innovation communities is the information in CEN and CENELEC Guide 10 'Policy on dissemination, sales and copyright of CEN-CENELEC Publications , which addresses the CEN-CENELEC policy on copyright.
• CEN and CENELEC Guide 39 'The role of standards in support of Technology Transfer translates these rather formalistic Guides into practical advice for the researchers and academics involved in standardization.
