On 27 June, Cinzia Missiroli, the Director for Standardization and Digital Solutions at CEN and CENELEC, was invited to speak at “Bringing the AI Regulation Forward”, a joint event co-organised by the Spanish Government and the European Commission to launch the Spanish AI Sandbox Pilot.
This event, hosted at the European Commission’s Brussels headquarters, introduced the plan by the Spanish Government to test the potential of regulatory sandboxes for AI, together with their possible use at the European level. The day was virtually opened by the European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton and the First Vice-president of the Government of Spain Nadia Calviño.
Cinzia Missiroli spoke at the panel on “Supporting SMEs in implementing the AI legislation through AI regulatory sandboxes”, which examined the potential use of regulatory sandboxes to help alleviate pressures on SMEs. Her fellow speakers were Daniel Všetečka, Director of Digital Economy and Smart Specialization at the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dragoş Tudorache, MEP and Sebastian Toffaletti, Secretary General at the European DIGITAL SME Alliance. Ms Missiroli gave her insights on how the use of sandboxes can inform the European standardisation system and how European standards can bring insights gained from sandboxes to the market.
CEN and CENELEC are excited about the future of AI and the potential benefits it can bring to the European Market. The two European Standardization Organizations congratulate the Spanish Government on launching this pioneering project and look forward to seeing how its results can feed into European Standards. CEN and CENELEC are dedicated to ensuring that future standards in AI reflect European values and encourage European innovation, and e will continue doing so through our work in the CEN-CENELEC JTC 21 ‘Artificial Intelligence’.
