Horizon Europe is the current EU framework programme for research and innovation (R&I) (2021-2027), with a budget of €95 billion. It aims at supporting researchers and innovators to deploy their ideas to boost growth, trade, and investment, thus creating a significant social and environmental impact.
Strengthening the link with Horizon Europe is an opportunity for CEN and CENELEC and their Members to be involved in innovative fields and to ensure the timely uptake of R&I results into standardization.
Previous EU framework programmes for R&I have already contributed directly and indirectly to standardization work programmes. Horizon Europe’s predecessor, Horizon 2020, has led to CEN and CENELEC Members taking part in more than 140 EU-funded research projects, 26 liaisons agreement between projects and CEN and CENELEC Technical Committees, and 70 new standardization deliverables published.
Horizon Europe aims to support valorising R&I results through standardization to the highest possible extent. Among the first set of calls for proposals published for 2021-2022, 125 calls have been identified as relevant for standardization. The new European Standardization Strategy, published in February 2022, recognizes that there is untapped potential in EU-funded pre-normative research in support of standardization needs.
CEN and CENELEC will prepare a reply to the European Commission’s consultation on European R&I programmes 2014-2027 with the aim to provide input on pre-normative research needs which could contribute to shaping the strategic orientations for Horizon Europe’s Strategic Plan 2025-2027.
