On 23 January, Elena Santiago Cid, Director General of CEN and CENELEC, was invited to speak at the European Parliament during the hearing on Standardization in the Single Market held by the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO).
This public hearing of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection was chaired by MEP Anna Cavazzini (Greens/EFA, Germany). It consisted of two panels examining the current state, emerging strategic priorities and the possible future of European Standardization.
This hearing took place in the context of the 30th year anniversary of the EU Single Market, in which standardization has played a key role in ensuring the free movement of goods and services between its members. The IMCO Committee is also currently working on an Own Initiative Report on “A Standardization Strategy for the Single Market”, due to be voted on in March 2023.
Ms Santiago Cid took part in the first panel entitled: “The European Standardization system. Strengths, challenges and preparing the system for the future”. Her contribution provided an overview of CEN and CENELEC’s views on the current challenges faced by the system, the potential for standards to support a green, digital and resilient European Economy, and how to unlock this potential. Other speakers in this panel include Maive Rute, Chief Standardization Officer of the European Commission; Luis Romero, Director General of ETSI; and Maitane Olabarria, Secretary General of Small Business Standards.
CEN and CENELEC welcomed the opportunity to speak at this hearing. The two standardization organisations look forward to continuing close cooperation with the European Parliament. European Standardization plays a significant role in the EU Single Market and the prosperity it has brought to the European Economy: based on this belief, CEN and CENELEC will continue to support these goals in the framework of the new European Standardization Strategy and to the benefit of all Europeans.
The recording of the hearing is available on IMCO’s website.
