PKN, the Polish Committee for Standardization, makes every effort to popularize knowledge about standardization among young people. One of its initiatives is the nationwide contest "Standardization and me", which it has organized for 11 years. The contest is addressed to students and teachers from secondary schools. Its purpose is to disseminate knowledge on standardization and on the importance of standards in everyday life.
The intiative is based on the belief that facilitating access to standardization and developing knowledge and education about it is key to ensuring the future sustainability of the whole system: it can contribute to professionalization and the development of important skill needed to support industry and society’s needs, and it is also allows to develop standardization itself, both as an academic discipline and as a profession.
This year’s edition was dedicated to the theme “Concrete or green? Sustainable urbanism with Polish Standards". On 14 April 2023, PKN hosted a ceremony with the winners of the Contest at the Copernicus Science Centre. During the meeting, the winners received diplomas and awards funded by PKN and the Polish Centre for Accreditation, the partner of this year's edition. The awards were presented by Ewa Zielińska, president of the Polish Committee for Standardization and CENELEC’s Vice-President Policy, and Lucyna Olborska, director of the Polish Centre for Accreditation.
The list of 2023 winners can be found on PKN’s website (in Polish).
This article, developed by PKN, is part of our special series dedicated to the European Year of Skills: through a series of interviews with standardization professionals, experts and business leaders coming from a variety of background, throughout the year we will explore the interaction between innovation, skills and standardization in some of the most relevant sectors for Europe’s long-term competitiveness.
