By 2024, the small Republic of San Marino could have its own national standardization body. In the meantime, it has started structuring an accreditation body, with the ambitious goal of European mutual recognition.
UNI, the Italian National Standardization Body, has signed a framework collaboration agreement with San Marino. Through the agreement, UNI will contribute to the identification and development of a portfolio of research, innovation, standardization, internationalization and training services and programmes, for the experimentation of a standardization model applicable to the territorial reality, economics and politics of the small Republic.
The first steps include allowing experts from San Marino to access UNI standardization activities, but also to CEN and ISO; the proposal of pre-normative activities for the development of reference practices; mutual involvement in research and innovation projects funded at national, European or international level; the dissemination of technical-scientific knowledge and the culture of standardization; recognition by San Marino of the value of products and services certified with the UNI brand in its territory; support and assistance in the future planning of the local standardization body.
The agreement enriches the skills of the technical committees and improves the definition of the "rules of the game" based on which the companies of the respective countries operate. Furthermore, the diffusion of the standardization culture will help create the conditions for increasing the circulation of products/services in an open and integrated market.
