Between 24 and 27 October 2023, the 1st Autumn School of Standardization, organized by SIST, Slovenia’s National Standardization Body, took place at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana. Twenty students from different study programs attended the extracurricular activity. The aim of the Autumn School of Standardization is to bring standardization closer to future engineers and give them the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of standardization and its impact on modern society.
The program was divided into workshops covering standardization and its processes, contact point activities and presentations of sales services. Mojca Lampič, Head of Standardization for the general area, Jožica Škof Nikolič, Head of SIST Contact Point, and Patricija Doplihar, Head of SIST Secretariat, presented the work of their departments and SIST's involvement in the national, European and international environment. Through these workshops, students got an insight into the process of national standardization and an understanding of the global aspect of standardization, learned about the advantages of involvement in the process and received first-hand information from company representatives about the advantages standards bring to production processes.
The students were greeted by the Director of SIST, mag. Marjetka Strle Vidali, and prof. dr. Janko Drnovšek, a long-time member of the SIST Board and the Head of the Laboratory for Metrology and Quality (LMK) who has been involved in standardization throughout his career. The autumn school was also an opportunity to show the application of standards in practice through visits to the LMK laboratory and the Renishaw company, and the presentation of the ETI company.
At the end of the Autumn School of Standardization, students received certificates of attendance and practical gifts sponsored by SIST and its partners participating in this year’s autumn school. On the occasion, Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs prof. dr. Boštjan Blažič emphasized the importance of such extracurricular events through which students can enrich their knowledge and acquire additional competencies. At SIST, we are happy and proud that students showed considerable interest in standardization, and we look forward to future projects of this type.
