On 22 February, Andreea GULACSI, CEN and CENELEC’s Director Policy and External Affairs, discussed how to utilise standards for the future of the Single Market at an exchange of views at the European Parliament with Enrico LETTA, President of the Jacques DELORS Institute and former Prime Minister of Italy.
Mr. Enrico LETTA has been tasked by the European Council to develop a comprehensive report on the current state of the Single Market and provide a long-term vision of what the European Union should strive for in its future. The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament (IMCO) invited a number of European organisations representing stakeholders that are instrumental to the functioning and impact of the Single Market to provide their views to Mr. Letta.
The European Standardization System is a cornerstone of the Single Market. European standards have ensured the flow of goods across the internal market and assured citizens that these goods are of high quality no matter which EU country they are in. As two of the official European Standardization Organisations (ESOs), CEN and CENELEC were excited to showcase the role of standards in the Single Market and to have the opportunity to provide input to this timely report.
The contribution of CEN and CENELEC outlined the strength of the public-private partnership at the heart of European Standardization and emphasized that Europe should take better advantage of this unique system to achieve its goals. Other speakers in the exchange included Mr. Luis ROMERO, Director General of ETSI; Ms Tania VANDENBERGHE, Senior Programme Manager at ANEC; Ms Monique GOYENS, Director-General of BEUC; and Mr Markus BEYRER, Director-General of BusinessEurope.
Andreea GULACSI said: “A European Single Market underpinned by a functioning European Standardization System, based on the principles of consensus, of inclusiveness, is what we should aim for the next 30 years of the Single Market!”.
