The European Commission, together with the members of the High-Level Forum on European Standardization (HLF), consider Quantum as a priority policy. Therefore, they decided to give this topic a separate space for political and technical discussions in the framework of the newly opened Workstream 16.
In the draft of the scoping paper for this workstream, ongoing initiatives on quantum-safe cryptography and quantum key distribution from CEN/CLC JTC 22 ‘Quantum Technologies’ and CEN/CLC JTC 13 ‘Cybersecurity and Data Protection’, along with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), are identified as key contributors to the standardization deliverables that provide the basis for the European standardization roadmap.
The workstream will look for ways to support the promotion of the European standardization roadmap at the international level, increase the coordination of European activities, improve the integration of research activities in standardization initiatives, and help to set priorities.
The group will be led by Italy as a Member State. There is great interest in the topic both on the side of the Member States and the other members of the HLF, such as European Standardization Organizations (ESOs), Annex III organizations, and trade and industry associations and academy.
The kick-off meeting is planned to be held on July 10th.
