The jubilee year for the Institute for Standardization of Serbia (ISS) was marked by numerous events, culminating in a Gala Ceremony held on 10 October 2024.
The 90th anniversary of ISS was marked by a series of events. The first and perhaps most notable was the release of a postage stamp featuring the portrait of Professor Dušan Tomić, the founder of the first standardization body in the region, president of the then Association of Engineers and Architects and dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
The following month, a public competition was launched for the creation of a video clip highlighting the importance of standardization in everyday life. Astrophysicist Dr Tijana Prodanović, a science communicator, invited young people aged 18-25 to create a one-minute video on TikTok and Instagram and share it with their friends. The overwhelming response resulted in the awarding of four prizes instead of the initially planned three.
The first standardization body in the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia was founded on 16 September 1934, so ISS organized a panel discussion on the same day and in the same location (Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade) exactly ninety years later. The panel focused on three topics: ’Institutional Framework for Standardization Education’, ’From Innovation to Standards and from Standards to Innovation’, and ’Standardization – from Professional Need to Need for Professionals’. The panel participants were university professors and ISS associates.
October saw two significant events: a Gala Ceremony held at the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade and a panel discussion on standardization education at the University of Belgrade Library.
The Gala ceremony, attended by numerous guests from Serbia and the region, featured the presentation of a monograph on the development of standardization in Serbia. Additionally, the winning videos from the youth competition were screened, and plaques and awards were presented to distinguished organizations with which ISS collaborates.
The following day, in addition to a panel discussion with representatives of regional national standardization bodies, an exhibition titled ’Standardization Through Old Press’ was opened at the Svetozar Marković University Library in Belgrade, along with a standards information centre. This provided all library users with electronic access to the collection of all Serbian standards.
The October events officially concluded the commemoration of the standardization jubilee in Serbia. ISS will continue to dedicate itself to educating young people about the importance of participating in standardization and its application in all segments of society.
