The objective of this Workshop is the development of one CEN Workshop Agreement intends to raise awareness and alignment about the key role of SAF in the transition to carbon neutrality in the aviation sector, as well as to explain the environmental benefits.
This CEN/WS intends to develop a CWA (Workshop Agreement): Tentative title: “Sustainable Aviation Fuel”
Tentative scope:
Objectives
The CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) within the Horizon 2020 lighthouse project ALIGHT endeavours to demonstrate the maturity of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) value chains, aligning with existing aviation fuel infrastructures and bolstering SAF deployment across EU airports. Its objectives encompass accelerating SAF adoption among airliners and proposing a comprehensive value chain framework with mapped standards for SAF and as a model for other e-fuels like hydrogen and electricity. Through mapping existing standards and proposing a scheming approach for alternative e-fuels, the CWA aims to facilitate replication and scaling up while catering to professionals along the SAF value chain.
Furthermore, the CWA's scope extends to providing a future document encompassing terminology, value chain descriptions, and reference standards for SAF and other e-fuels, targeting key stakeholders such as airports, airliners, SAF suppliers, and local authorities. This initiative aligns with the EU's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, as outlined in the European Green Deal and reinforced by the Fit for 55 roadmap. The RefuelEU Aviation legislation, part of the Fit for 55 package, sets ambitious targets for increasing the share of sustainable aviation fuels, thus driving the transition to carbon neutrality in the aviation sector through mandatory quotas and regulations, ensuring a progressive increase in the usage of SAF and synthetic fuels until 2050.
The final deliverable of this Workshop (CEN/CWA) is expected to be finalized in July 2025.
