CEN Workshop Guidelines to create a Digital Product Passport –the EU project CircThread experience

The planned CEN Workshop Agreement will define guidelines for decision-making on designing a Digital Product Passport (DPP), including its data carrier, information portal contents, and information exchanges and applications, based on the experience of the H2020 project CircThread.

These guidelines will assist a new role, the DPP designer, within companies or organizations needing a DPP or parts of it to configure the content and the system around it. The primary goal is to enable organizations to develop a DPP in-house within the European DPP system possibilities or to contract third parties for DPP deployment.

The technical approach will involve evaluating DPP designs at individual item, batch, and product model levels, with a focus on B2C and durable products. Individual item DPPs will be updatable throughout the product lifecycle. The content will include the DPP context, associated circular economy use cases, a checklist to guide DPP setup, and a decision-tree for determining the design of data carriers, information portals, DPP contents, and information exchanges. This decision-tree will consider user interests, collaboration needs, information availability barriers, operational requirements, and other application needs within a broader circular economy information system.

The outputs of the workshop will include guidelines for the DPP design process and practical examples of a 'designer' navigating these guidelines based on the CircThread project. These outputs will be valuable for DPP designers within companies and collaborative parties, such as consumer organizations, PROs, repairers, and recyclers, to help design their product DPP structures and contents.

The planned CEN Workshop Agreement will not include mandatory requirements but will align with the most updated standardization and regulatory developments. It is aimed at DPP designers and collaborative parties needing DPPs for their users.

The virtual kick-off meeting will be held on July 23th 2024 (9.30 – 12.30 CEST). People interested to participate in the kick-off meeting can register using the form below. All interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft Project Plan using the commenting form below.
