The Spanish Association for Standardization, UNE, and Fundación ONCE, are organising the workshop ‘Towards common European criteria on accessibility of the built environment: Outcomes of Mandate M/420’ on 22 March 2021 from 10:00 to 12:00.
To ensure the development of trustworthy AI systems that respect fundamental values and human rights recognised in Europe, standardization is needed. For this reason, CEN and CENELEC have established the new CEN-CENELEC Joint Technical Committee 21 ‘Artificial Intelligence’, based on the recommendations presented in the CEN-CENELEC response to the EC White Paper on AI and the German Standardization Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence.
On 24 February 2021 the European Commission adopted the new EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change.
CEN and CENELEC are happy to support the EU Product Safety Award, organised by the European Commission, which celebrates businesses – large and small – that are going the extra mile to protect their customers and uphold the highest standards.
On 15 February 2021, CEN and CENELEC will participate to the webinar “Africa Trading with Itself: Role of Standards and Technical Regulations in actualising Free Trade under the AfCFTA". The webinar, organised by ARSO – the African Organisation for Standardization, will highlight the various opportunities presented by the AfCFTA tools to address the existing Technical Barriers to Trade in Africa.
The European Standards Organisations, CEN, CENELEC and ETSI, joined forces with ENISA, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, to organise its annual conference virtually this year. The event, which took place from 2nd to 4th February 2021, attracted over 2000 participants from the EU and from around the world.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CEN and CENELEC community took a series of decisive actions in order to contribute to addressing the health crisis. CEN and CENELEC are now happy to share some key take-aways from this experience in the newly released report “Lessons Learned During the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

Standards have a fundamental value in supporting and mainstreaming research and innovation. Yet, this value is very often misunderstood or underrated, also by policy makers – with very serious consequences for the ability of innovation ecosystems to scale up. This issue is at the heart of a new study published by Alfred Radauer, Driving from the Fringe into Spotlight: the underrated role of standards and standardization in RTDI policy and evaluation.
European standardization is a collective effort: many different people, coming from a variety of backgrounds, contribute in various forms to making European standards a success.
