The motivation for this Workshop came from multiple European research projects and large-scale pilots that found that they were all needing to identify the most suitable lawful basis for collecting and processing personal health data for the development, deployment, testing and evaluation of digital health innovations. This CWA aims to combine the experience of various R&I projects regarding this topic in a best practice guide on how to obtain user consent for personal health information.

On Tuesday March 8th the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC), together with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) held a virtual event to celebrate the renewal of their Cooperation Agreement which took place at the end of 2021.

In 2021, the European Commission launched the latest Research Framework programme: Horizon Europe. Horizon Europe will run from 2021 to 2027 with a budget of 95.5 billion Euros targeting researchers and innovators in pursuit of Europe’s strategic goals, with a focus on the green and digital transition.
In April, the online workshop ‘Organ on Chip: Towards Standardization’ took place as the 2021 edition of Putting Science into Standards (PSIS) in collaboration with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
The 2021 edition of the CEN and CENELEC Standards+Innovation Technical Body Officer Awards, a biennial award presented to a technical body officer who actively and successfully collaborated with researchers/innovators within his/her technical body, was presented in Brussels on Tuesday 7 December 2021.
Prof. Knut Blind has been reappointed as Chair of CEN-CENELEC Working Group STAIR (Standards, Innovation & Research) for three more years, until the end of 2024. STAIR is the focal point within CEN and CENELEC for any matter related to integrating standardization with innovation and research.
Standardization and innovation are linked. Successful innovation requires attention for various aspects: what is the new technology like, what is the economic aspect, how does it help society and what is sustainability? Standardization contributes to increasing the chance of success for innovative concepts.
On 21 October, the European Committee of Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) renewed their cooperation agreement for further five years. Through the agreement, the three organisations aim to enhance the exchange of knowledge and expertise between scientific research and European standardization.
