The new Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR) (Regulation (EU) 2019/1009) will enter into force in July 2022, repealing Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003. The new Regulation introduces new requirements related to quality, safety, and labelling of fertilizing products and extends the scope to organic fertilizers, organo-mineral fertilizers, growing media, biostimulants, and other products. The Regulation also harmonises EU rules for products derived from waste organic materials and by-products and provides rules to recover nutrients into secondary raw materials.
2022 is the European Year of Youth. To celebrate this occasion, CEN and CENELEC decided to launch campaign that will run in the coming months, presenting a series of young professionals active in European standardization. In the first episode of the series, we get to know Kevin Carta, from France.
Wastewater treatment and organic fraction of municipal solid waste are responsible for the annual generation of up to 138 million tonnes of bio-waste in the EU. It has been estimated that almost 75% of this waste is currently sent to incineration or landfilling, with an extraordinary environmental and economic cost associated. Moreover, a high percentage of this waste holds a great potential as a source of recycled materials or valuable component recovery source. Wastewater contains cellulose and nutrients that could be used as feedstock for many applications. Solid organic waste could be also an interesting source of materials for added value applications (e.g., ectoine, polyhydroxyalkanoates, biomethane, etc.), to complement their conventional valorisation routes (e.g., fertilizers, biogas, etc).
The CEN Workshop ‘Test method for the evaluation of the adhesive properties of fibre reinforced polymer composite joints’ has developed its first draft CWA.
Mobile devices represent a unique challenge for law enforcement. Due to their wide use, they underpin many criminal investigations. Moreover, criminal offenders, organised crime and terrorist organisations use mobile devices for various purposes, which faces criminal prosecution with many challenges. Law enforcement need not only to access the data stored on mobile devices, but also to provide it as court evidence in a trustworthy and reliable manner.
As a result of a wide-ranging reflection on the future of European Standardization, on 2 February 2022 the European Commission presented the new European Standardization Strategy. The overall objective of the Strategy is to respond to the need for Europe to strengthen the strategic role standards play in the Single and the Global Market.
The Standards+Innovation Awards acknowledge and celebrate every year the important contributions of Researchers, Innovators and Entrepreneurs to Standardization. In 2022, CEN and CENELEC will host the fourth edition of the Standards+Innovation Awards.
On the 2nd of March, the CEN and CENELEC Focus Group Organ-on-Chip (FGOoC) had its Kick-off Meeting. More than 80 stakeholders participated and discussed the potential for standardization and the way forward in this innovative field of biomedical technology.
To aid in the development of a European Professional ICT workforce, it is important to provide education and training fit to meet the requirements of the ICT professional community. This requires enhanced approaches to address the education of new and existing ICT practitioners and the need for continuous professional development.
On 5 April, the ETUC submitted its reply to the consultation on the proposed amendment to article 10 of Regulation (EU) 1025/2012 on European standardization, which the European Commission had issued as part of the new European Standardization Strategy package on 2 February.
