The CWA establishes a common view on how a Digital Product Passport (DPP) for Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) should be structured and which data are necessary to develop circularity in electronics.
In the recent years, the European Authorities published a set of legislations (e.g. Digital Product Passport, Chips Act, Critical Raw Materials Act) to define, structure and implement the concept of circularity on the EU Single Market. In a context where sustainability is of utmost importance for the European Union, different European industries have a key role to play to make this sustainable approach successful.
Given their omnipresence in the modern society and the increasing demand for data exchange, electronics appliances generate significant amount of waste.
The European economy is becoming even more semiconductor-dependent and its electronic industry is at the same time fully dependant to extra-EU suppliers. Beside the sustainable aspects, independence is an additional strategic driver to foster the development of solutions to reuse electronic components.
Recycling of electronics components is a challenging operation mainly because of an absence of information on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and the fact that no specific measures have been defined yet to support the standardized reuse of electronic components.
The development of a CWA on Digital Product Passport for Printed Circuit Boards is proposed as there is the need to define the type of data to be embedded in a DPP for PCBs. As consensus-based guidelines the CWA will establish a common view on how a DPP for PCBs should be structured and which kind of data are mandatory to really allow and apply circular approaches in electronics.
The CWA to develop is related to the CIRC-UITS project (funded by European Commission European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement N° 101091490: https://circuitsproject.eu).
The planned CWA is intended to be used by policymakers, manufacturers, industry associations, experts, recyclers; research institutes, … and will be drafted during the CIRC-UITS project timeframe, that ends in 31-12-2025.
The virtual kick-off meeting will be held on 20th January 2025. People interested to participate in the kick-off meeting can register using the form below.
All interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft Project Plan using the commenting form below, to the Workshop secretary, Sarah KÖHLER (Sarah.koehler@din.de) by January 10th, 2024.
