CEN Workshop on 'Good practice recommendations for a common EU methodology for the valuation of ecosystem benefits (monetary and non-monetary)'

The motivation for this workshop comes from the Horizon Europe funded project MARBEFES - MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services (Grant Agreement no 101060937). One aspect of the project aims to achieve ecological and socio-economic valuation through a validated set of innovative tools. As part of the development of these tools, the project identified the need for a common methodology for ecosystem valuation which could be applied across European waters.

The planned CEN workshop agreement (CWA) will define good practice recommendations for the valuation of ecosystem benefits (monetary and non-monetary). The recommendations will establish a methodology for the valuation of ecosystem benefits (monetary and non-monetary) that aims to be applicable and adjustable to fit assessments across European seas.

The characterisation and related valuation method for the valuation of ecosystem benefits and co-benefits (monetary and non-monetary) will be applicable to provisioning services (such as biomass provision and water supply), regulation and maintenance services (such as climate regulation, soil erosion control, water purification, flood control, and pollination) and cultural services (such as nature watching, social gathering, natural heritage sites, and recreation). It will combine economic, social science and humanities methodologies.

The proposer of this workshop is Akvaplan-niva, and the secretariat holder of this workshop is Standards Norway.

The kick-off meeting will be held as a physical and digital meeting on Monday 09:00-12:00, on 21st of October 2024. The physical meeting will take place in the Seminar Room, Charles Institute, University College Dublin, Ireland.
